How We Handle Commercial Insurance for Drivers Under 25

By Marcus Finch, Operations Lead·January 11, 2025·7 min read

Adding younger staff to business vehicle policies is a common headache for employers in Merseyside. High insurance premiums or blanket bans often leave younger employees stuck in the office while senior staff handle travel. We set up our commercial insurance coverage to help local businesses include their junior staff safely and affordably.

The Age Barrier in Corporate Car Sharing

Most commercial fleet policies in Merseyside automatically block drivers under 25, or they demand an extra £1,200 annual excess per young driver. If you run a small business on Duke Street with 14 employees, excluding your 22-year-old junior staff slows down your daily operations. You end up sending senior managers on simple cross-city trips to Birkenhead just because of insurance paperwork. We wanted to fix this imbalance for Liverpool business owners who rely on younger talent.

To get around this, we worked directly with our underwriting team in October 2024 to create a transparent system. Our current setup allows businesses to add drivers aged 21 and over to their Fanseek corporate account. We do not charge a monthly retainer for young drivers, but we do require them to have held a clean UK driving licence for at least 18 months. This opens up clean travel to your graduates and apprentices without putting a massive dent in your quarterly transport budget.

What We Require from Drivers Aged 21 to 24

To keep our rates fair for all 83 of our active business clients in Liverpool, we have a clear checking process for junior staff. The driver must upload their UK driving licence and a DVLA check code directly into our system. The process automatically verifies their driving history within 3 hours during normal office hours. Honestly, we have to be strict about history; drivers under 25 must have zero active points on their record and no at-fault claims in the last 24 months.

If your employee has a clean record, they are cleared to drive our vehicles. They can access our Audi e-tron or Tesla Model 3 vehicles right away. By the way, we do not allow drivers under 25 to book our Porsche Taycan models due to the high performance rating of those specific vehicles (which we park at our central hub near Cook Street). This simple restriction is what keeps our overall group insurance premium manageable for everyone.

By keeping high-performance models restricted, we keep young driver excess fair and predictable.

Real-World Costs and Excess Structures

When a driver aged 25 or over has an incident in a Fanseek vehicle, the standard insurance excess is capped at £450. For drivers aged 21 to 24, the excess rises to £850 to balance the risk profile. This is a one-off charge only applied if the driver is found at fault in a collision. We believe in being upfront about these numbers so there are no surprises on your monthly invoice. If your apprentice clips a kerb in Speke and damages an alloy wheel, the repair cost is billed up to that £850 limit.

We also track driving behaviour metrics through our app to help keep everyone safe on the road. The system monitors sharp acceleration and heavy braking over each mile. If a young driver maintains a safety score above 82% over their first 150 miles, we automatically reduce their excess by £100 on their next booking. It is a practical way to encourage sensible driving on the standard Liverpool commute down the A562.

How to Register Your Junior Staff Today

Adding a new team member to your corporate roster takes less than 6 minutes inside the Fanseek business portal. Your account administrator simply inputs the employee's work email address. The employee then receives an automated invite to download our app on their phone. Once they complete the identity check, they can see all available vehicles parked near your office, including our fully charged Tesla Model 3s at the Liverpool Waterfront.

There are no desks, no paperwork. The new driver simply walks up to the designated electric vehicle, holds their phone to the windscreen, and the doors open. Unlock with your phone. They can track every mile in the app, and the journey cost is automatically billed to your central company card. It ensures your business stays fully compliant with local road laws without adding a single minute of admin work to your busy week.
